Liu Xia and more at DOX

I've been recently to Prague and among all the museums of the city I decided to visit DOX Centre for Contemporary Art.

I chose that museum because of the poster exhibition they advertised in the tube stations. It looked quite interesting and it was, indeed. There were posters of the last 100 years, covering: the WW I and II, the Spanish Civil War, the Cold War, the fight between comunism and capitalism, the changes from 1989, the new technologies and the effects of globalization.

When I was done with this exhibition I went to see what other exhibitions were running at the same time and then, it was when I discovered Liu Xia.

I have to admit that I had never heard of her before but her story should be known everywhere. Liu Xia is a Chinese painter, poet and photographer. She is married to Liu Xiaobo, Noble Peace Prize winner in 2010 and political prisoner (sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment in 2009) because of defending the implementation of democracy in his country (Charter 08). Since he received the award, she has been under illegal house arrest with no means of communicating with the outside world.
The former president of Czech, Václav Havel, played an important role in the international efforts calling for Liu Xiaobo's freedom and he asked Liu Xia to show her photographs in Prague as part of this campaign.
Also, Amnesty International has been calling the Chinese authorities to perform an urgent action on Liu Xia due to her critical state of health caused by the long term isolation.

This exhibition really made my hair stand on end and I strongly recommend all of you to visit it if you have the chance.

Hace bien poquito estuve de visita por Praga y entre los muchos museos que hay en la ciudad, me decidí por ir a ver el DOX Centro de Arte Contemporáneo.

Había visto anunciada una exposición de pósters que tenía buena pinta, como resultó ser. Había pósters de los últimos 100 años, cubriendo todos los acontecimientos históricos y sociales: las dos Guerras Mundiales, la Guerra Fría, la Guerra Civil Española, la lucha entre comunistas y capitalistas, los cambios a partir de 1989, la introducción en la sociedad de las nuevas tecnologías y los efectos de la globalización. Una vez que terminé de ver toda la exposición me puse a recorrer el museo a ver qué otras cosas interesantes me encontraba. Ahí fue cuando descubrí a Liu Xia.
He de reconocer que nunca había oído hablar de ella antes, pero creo que su historia (y la de su marido) debería conocerla todo el mundo.
Liu Xia es una pintora, poeta y fotógrafa china. Está casada con Liu Xiaobo, ganador de Noble de la Paz en 2010 y encarcelado desde 2009 por apoyar abiertamiente la instauración de la democracia en china (Carta 08). Desde que él recibió el premio, Liu Xia se encuentra bajo arresto domicialiario ilegal sin ningún medio de comunicación con el mundo exterior, lo que le está causando graves problemas de salud y por lo que Amnistía Internacional pide que se tomen medidas de urgencia.
El antiguo presidente de la Rep. Checa, Václav Havel, ha sido una de las voces internacionales más importantes pidiendo la liberación de Liu Xiaobo y, por este motivo, pidió a Liu Xia mostrar sus fotografías en Praga para apoyar esta causa.
